Norsk Grindbygg Woodshed c.2019

In the autumn of 2019, I had a rare bit of spare time, an eastern white pine log that a neighbor had given me, and a copy of a Norwegian book on Traditional Building (written entirely in Norwegian).

In the spring of 2017, I attended a two week long workshop at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota.  The class built a traditional Norwegian Stavlinebygg with the guidance of an instructor visiting from Hordaland, Norway. This proved to be both a wonderful vacation and also an epiphany of sorts; igniting a keen interest in traditional Nordic building for me personally.

Since then, I’ve wanted to build a type of traditional Norwegian building known as Grindbygg.  We’ve been in need of a woodshed for some 17 years now. So, given the book, Google Translate, the log, the need of a woodshed, and the gift of spare time, I embarked.  And, it turned out to be a very enjoyable and illuminating project.
