Orthodox Coffins
Late Autumn/Early Winter 2025-2026
These two identical coffins were commissioned by an Orthodox Christian couple getting up in years in anticipation of the eventual and inevitable passage from their earthly lives into eternity. The coffins are patterned after the traditional six-sided European style coffins and bear both symbols and prayers common in the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church. Local yellow-poplar wood was used throughout, with accents in local black walnut. Effort was made to minimize the use of metal fasteners. The lining is 100% cotton muslin over a layer of hand-planed cedar shavings and the oil finish is naturally derived from plant sources without any petroleum additives. The Trisagion Prayer, along the edge of the single-piece-fully-removable lid, is hand-painted using a font-style similar to that found in many Orthodox icons.
